DIORAMANEA - where art comes to life

The Diorama was a curious but sophisticated phenomenon at the crossroads of romantic painting, precinema and the theatre at the age of gas light. Romantic painting and precinema have influenced J.L.M. Daguerre, the inventor of the Diorama, to the same degree as the Diorama itself has again influenced home entertainment and set design. Unlike the many precinema attempts to set a still picture into motion or to create pseudomotion through scenic development as in Panoramas, the ultimate goal of romantic painting - as well as of the Diorama performances - was more than just motion. The aim was to reproduce emotional feelings by performing the painting. The size of the image, its natural proportions and the concept of vision, illusion and audio background in the darkness of the theatre had a high impact on emotional reality. People would describe their strong impressions in the newspaper or even faint during performance.
