Alois Ellmauer qualified as a master cabinetmaker before studying theatre design at the Salzburg Mozarteum of Music, Theatre and Visual Arts. He has been creating his own projects as well as designing sets, masks and costumes, mostly for independent theatre companies in Austria, since 1989. He has worked on opera and theatre productions at the Salzburg Festival, Opéra La Monnaie in Brussels, Opéra National de Montpellier and the RuhrTriennale as an assistant to Karl Ernst Hermann, Moidele Bickel/Peter Stein and Ilya Kabakov. Alois’ theatrical career is complemented by two further strands of work: constructing scale models and designing and crafting furniture. He is based in Salzburg.
