Edutainment - Before the Diorama was invented, 18th century edutainment would take place in the market. To catch a glimpse of a far away town or landscape was a rare pleasure. Ordinary people had no means to travel. They collected information about foreign countries by reading and storytelling. It was the showman or the itinerant lanternist on the market place who would present views from foreign places (1) in his peepbox (2) or magic lantern show (3). Socially privileged people had an optical instrument (Zograscope) to show such images at home (4). Later, new optical mass media like the Panorama and the Diorama appeared and replaced the entertainment boxes and magic lanterns on the market place. |
