Influence from romantic painting - Painters who travelled abroad would eventually bring home paintings of spectacular views and extraordinary sites. Romantic painters often depicted landscapes or buildings under special light conditions like dawn, sunset (1/2, K.F. Schinkel), moonlight, mist and fire, or they chose changing transparency (3/4, C.D. Friedrich) to outline and emphasize the supranatural, ideal and divine aspect of light in nature. Romantic painting has probably influenced dioramic performances like 'Interior of the Chapel of Holyroodhouse' (effect of moonlight, 1823/24), 'Roslyn Chapel' (effect of sun, 1824/25), 'The valley of Sarnen' (1822/23), 'The village of Unterseen' (1826/27, both in Switzerland) as well as 'The valley of Chamonix' (1831-33) or 'Edinburgh during fire' (1826/27/32). |
