Influence from precinema - The list of attempts to set the still image into motion is long. Some of the inventions on the way to cinema had funny names: Thaumatrope, Praxinoscope, Eidophysikon etc. All of them were small size installations for individuals or small groups (1, J.H. Lips). One of the most sophisticated ones, similar to the Diorama in terms of topics and the quality of painting, was the so called Diaphanorama (2/3, F.N. König). Large size circular paintings known as Panoramas (Bourbaki, Mesdag etc.) also suggested a slight notion of time and motion through their scenic development . But in contrast to the Diorama they were opaque. |
