The subject - To our knowledge there are only two dioramic traces left today: the architectural skeleton of Regents Park Diorama (London) and the painting in the church of Bry-sur-Marne (near Paris). All other dioramic theatres and paintings were destroyed by fire. But there also are some small lithographs left which were drawn from original Diorama paintings, e.g. Spooner's Protean View No. 4 'Destruction of a Swiss Village by Avalanche' was drawn from the original Paris Diorama 'Landslide in the valley of Goldau, Switzerland, on 2 September 1806'. Unlike the original, the model has only one viewing channel. Effective vision in the channel depends entirely on the application of correct scale, perspective and proportion (1). Spooner’s lithograph was chosen as a master to be copied, this without knowing if it would work well in terms of vision in the channel. Spooner had downscaled his portable format approximately 100 : 1 from the original. For the model Spooner's portable format has now been enlarged again to a format 1 : 8 of the original Diorama. Vision was then tested carefully in a DIORAMANEA prototype and has proved to work well (2). It seems that Spooner already had copied well from the original |
